About

Within our community, we regard each community gathering as a ritual time, as a sacred moment.  We observe specific forms of etiquette, or formal expressions of attentiveness and reverence, when gathering together.

Individuals should arrive at least five minutes before any practice session or meeting begins. If this is not possible, please discuss your obstacles with our directors.

In the case of meditation, take your place on mat and cushion so that you are ready to begin practice at the sound of the wooden fish drum.  If you arrive late, enter the space and take your seat as quietly as possible. Work to apply contemplative practice to each and every activity, including opening and closing doors.

Participants should wear loose-fitting, comfortable and modest clothing. Clothing should be absent of logos or large writing.

Choosing to participate in community gatherings thus involves certain personal responsibilities. Utmost among these responsibilities are personal dedication to Daoist practice-realization and attentive awareness of the interpersonal and interdependent nature of such practice. To ensure a harmonious and mutually supportive cultivation environment, purification is necessary. The following preparations should be embraced and embodied:

(1) Bathe the day before or day of community gatherings.

(2) Do not use strong smelling deodorants or perfumes.

(3) Observe sexual abstinence for at least one full day prior.

(4) Abstain from intoxicants for at least one full day prior.

(5) Follow a vegetarian diet for at least one full day prior.

(6) Be attentive to dietary choices, including gastronomical consequences. Avoid strong-smelling vegetables such as garlic.

(7) Dedicate the meeting day to contemplation and silence.

(8) Purify your thinking, speaking, and behavior.

Meditation cushions and mats are provided. Chairs and meditation benches are also available.
